Still life is always a challenge. Learning to set the 'scene' for a still life can be key to successful painting.

With my watercolor students I continually emphasize the importance  of working with complements--the two pigments directly across the color wheel. Here is an illustration--in three still life paintings--of the use of complements creating colorful grays.The fourth painting, Three Tomatoes, is different ... it is a study in grays but employing all three of the primaries.

What shall I paint today?  Fruits and vegetables, of course. They make great subjects for still life paintings. When I first began to paint I would tell friends that I painted everything I brought home from the grocery.... and then ate it.
